Learn to Gym: Building gym confidence in young women

Mrs G Beardmore —

Are you interested in finding out how to use gym equipment safely and effectively? Would you like to build your confidence and skills to train in Columba's Marsh Sports Centre Fitness Room? Then this programme may just be for you!

Past student of Columba College, Olivia McRae is studying at the Otago Polytechnic Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health. As part of her study this year, Olivia is wanting to connect with young women in our school community who would like to learn how to use the fitness room and gym equipment. Olivia has set a programme which looks really exciting and will involve 5-6 sessions with a group of interested students onsite here at Columba. The sessions will cover:

  • Safe and effective exercise advice
  • Session development (warm up/cool down and stretching exercises)
  • Introductory exercises (body weight, free-weight and variety of other equipment use)
  • Advanced exercises (free-weights and more functional options)
  • Designing your own workout step by step

Please see Olivia's attached flyer for more information about this fantastic opportunity.

Of note, there will be no cost to students to participate in this programme and the days/times of sessions will be set when an interested group of students is formed.

We warmly encourage you to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to learn about gym training and safety while exercising.

If you are interested in finding out more or keen to participate in the programme, then please email Mrs Gretchen Beardmore in the Sports Department to register your interest.
