Year 8 Camp: Deep Cove 2023

Mrs J Armstrong —

Year 8 students experienced various weather conditions during their recent camp at Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound, Fiordland.

Rachel and Bailey from Adventure Southland accompanied the group and guided the students through many activities. The students had the opportunity to fish, observe the night sky, spy on glow worms, identify local flora and fauna, feed weka and kea, get close to a waterfall, hike a hanging valley, and immerse in the stunning surroundings.

A highlight for some of our students was the boat cruise in the cove, where we got a close-up view of waterfalls and baby seals. The brief time spent on the Tasman Sea was just long enough for everyone to experience the wave motion!

Students made the most of every moment, rising bright and early and exploring and adventuring all day. These adventurers arrived home safely, weary and happy, in time for a restful Easter holiday. The students had access to their cell phones on the buses to and from the camp but were ‘cell phone free’ for the camp. This meant that they communicated and engaged with each other face-to-face. We were fortunate to have Greg North and Mrs MacKay as our photographers. The images have been collated into an exceptional short film and series of images that the students can access.

We are grateful for the assistance of a very supportive and vibrant group of parent helpers: Simon Hore, Tom Hudson, Ronak Singh, Greg North, Sarah Waterman, and Linda Wilson. Thanks also to the staff members, Ms Gemmill, Mrs Graves, Mrs Graamans and Mrs MacKay, who all played a vital role in the camp's success.
