Fearless Girl by Kirsten Visbal

Ms Andrew —

This is an iconic and popular public sculpture of a ''Fearless Girl'', by Kirsten Visbal which pulls many visitors to its site outside the Stockmarket in New York, home of much Art and culture.

Recently this sculpture has been given a 'make-over'. Some person has provided the 'girl' with a mask and has added this to her face to protect her! This is an 'art gesture' which responds to the covid-19 situation today.

'Fearless Girl' with mask

Art is of course vital to life and well-being for a community, as either a beautiful thing to enjoy or a space where an artist can provide a response to something from the 'every-day' or perhaps a provocation to political, environmental, or artistic concerns in our world today.

This work is stunning and is something that people can touch and with this 'new-look' the girl with a mask it suggests a preservation of humanity. This gesture of the addition of the mask can be read or understood as a symbolic sign that we need to keep ourselves and others 'safe'.

Art is a powerful or subtle or provocative way to express ideas and stances.

(If you find this notion of public art interesting; google; 'Banksy' and his public artworks on public buildings walls and fences around the world).
