Nora Paicu meets poet Selina Tusitala Marsh

Miss Nora Paicu —

On the 1st of June, GirlBoss NZ hosted the guest speaker Professor Selina Tusitala Marsh in an interview by Alexia Hilbertidou in regards to her work in English and Poetry.

This live interview could be accessed by GirlBoss NZ Alumna. Selina Tusitala's work especially relates to the topic Ms Togneri's Year 12 English Class is studying during these two terms in regards to Poetry on the theme: Climate, Culture and Identity. Selina was one of the first poets we studied the work of, her poems including "Tuvalu Blues", "Breaking up with Captain Cook on Our 250th Anniversary" and "How to Make a Captain Cook Cupcake with Pink Frosting".

I attended her interview where she talked about the importance of spreading your story no matter what other people think, what it was like getting her PhD, cultural identity and uniqueness, her journey, suffering from imposter syndrome and how she overcomes it, and how she writes her poems, how long it takes and advice about dreaming big. Tusitala also shared a quote that she has taped on her university office door: "A bird doesn't sing because it has the answer, a bird sings because it has a song" by Maya Angelou. Selina highly encourages all people to read as much as they can since it is such a beautiful thing to do.
