Cellphone Use At School

Executive Assistant —

As a College we are committed to valuing and protecting the school day as a time for our students to engage with teaching and learning opportunities and communicate face-to-face with each other in a positive and respectful manner.

To facilitate this, the following guidelines have been put in place.  These are effective from 8.40am until 3.15pm (3pm in the Junior School), as well as special occasions (e.g. Sunday services, athletics day, etc).

  • Cellphones are to be left at home or kept out of sight.  This includes not being visible in a blazer or other pocket.

  • Cellphones must be turned off and not used during the school day.  This includes during break times, between classes and in hallways, stairwells and bathrooms.

  • Permission to use cellphones for educational purposes is at the discretion of the teacher.  Students may ask permission from their teacher to use their cellphone to take a photo of notes or something that is linked to the outcomes of the class.

  • The same rules will apply when on an EOTC day trip. During overnight trips, students will only be allowed cellphones at times agreed to by the TiC of the trip in order to make contact with home.

If there is an urgent communication that is needed during the day, students and whānau can make contact through the school office.

Should a cellphone be used during the school day, in contravention of these guidelines, the consequences will be as follows:

  • 1st Offence: Phone confiscated for the Day. The staff member will notify the office and send the student to hand the cellphone over immediately (if during a break) or at the end of the period.  The cellphone will be named and held at the office.  The student will be able to collect the cellphone at the end of the day. A record of the confiscation will be placed on KAMAR.

  • 2nd Offence: Cellphone is confiscated as per 1st offence and a Parent/Caregiver will be contacted to collect the confiscated cellphone. Boarding students’ cellphones will be collected by a member of the Boarding House staff.

  • 3rd Offence: As this is a repeated offence, a detention will be given and an appropriate plan developed.
