Arts Prefects, Juliette McDonald and Brie Monk

Mrs E Harris —

In these articles, we talk to our student leaders about what it is they actually do and how they are growing through their role(s)

What do you see as the function of your Prefect role within the Columba community?

Juliette - To inspire the younger students to get involved in the Arts and work with each other and with the community to support Arts subjects.

Brie - to promote all aspects of the arts inside and outside the Columba community. Also to encourage other students to get involved in the arts and showcase how it can help you once you leave school.

How has your Columba experience thus far prepared you for this role?

Juliette - Columba puts a lot of emphasis on leadership and teamwork skills, and I’ve had the privilege of growing up alongside a very creative and innovative group of people in my Year. Not to mention the Arts Department has always encouraged my passion, not just for art, but for communication and people skills.

Brie - During my time at Columba I have been involved with as many drama productions as possible which includes organising and helping younger students to boost their confidence in the drama field.

Do you have any initiatives planned for the year?

Juliette - Making the Arts Soirée the best it can be and maybe starting some new artsy clubs!!

Brie - THE MUSICAL! The Girton Arts/Humanities board and many more :)

Explain challenges you have faced in taking on this leadership role; how have you dealt with them?

Juliette - I’m not naturally much of a leader and so skills such as organising people have been a trial for me, but having trust in one another and allowing open communication always helps.

Brie - sometimes there is a lack of communication, but by taking the time to try and sort things out everything has been resolved in the end.

What key advice do you have for future Arts prefects?

Juliette - I think being an Arts prefect gives you an amazing opportunity to really connect and work with people who share your passion, and you can make a real difference to the school lives of other students through your initiatives and ideas; so don’t be afraid to network and be proactive in working on the things you're passionate about!

Brie - ENJOY IT! Being an Arts prefect is very exciting and it helps to bring out an even more creative side in some people in some cases. Also when you’re in your last year of high school look into other things in the Arts that’s not your 'usual' -  for me, for example, I’m mainly a drama person but I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone to try and sing as well as I can to get a role in the musical (fingers crossed).

Who are the key people you work with in your role?

Juliette - Arts teachers and the Arts Committee, but I’ve got to know a lot of the other Prefects better too.

Brie - Mrs Casbolt, Ms B, Ms Andrew and anyone in the Arts committee

What has been the highlight of your prefect journey so far?

Juliette - designing and spreading posters for things like the Dunk tank and sausage sizzle has been quite fun!

Brie - I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Prefects focus group a lot; talking about the Arts is something I’m very passionate about and I’m excited to do more of that this year.
