Year 9 Drama Performances by Ms. Lindsay’s class

Jody Syme, Chloe Heineke, and Ms. Lindsay —

Several students in Ms. Lindsay’s Year 9 Drama class wrote original scripts that were premiered on Tuesday 1 August. ‘The Death Plan’, written by Laura Canton, and ‘Daily News Channel 2000’ by Aidan Forbes were the two plays that were chosen to be showcased.

The Death Plan: written and directed by Laura Canton

“Brilliant storyline and acting with a well thought out set”. This is a quote from an audience member who watched the well-executed play, written and directed by Laura Canton, an aspiring actor and director. The Death Plan’ was extremely serious in tone, set during WWII, looking at life from the perspective of average German families. A plan is hatched to assassinate Hitler by a group of criminals; however, a primary school teacher decides that life with Hitler at the helm is preferable to how life was before he came into power and she reports the plan to the Gestapo.

The cast would like to thank Ms. Lindsay for helping them with their acting skills, which led to a very successful show, and to the audience members for supporting them.

‘Daily News Channel 2000’: written and directed by Aidan Forbes

As one of the actors in the play of Aidan Forbes, her play was both fun and exciting to act in. The play shows the story of a news channel which broadcasts a wide range of hilarious and conspicuously over-exaggerated news items. The play includes 3 different scenes, portraying 3 different ridiculously funny news broadcasts. The first scene tells the “tragic” story of a man named David who disappeared from breakfast for 6 minutes and was instantly declared missing. The second scene depicts an “horrendous” act of robbery -the thievery of 2000 chicken nuggets committed by a suspicious woman. The third and final scene reports on a worldwide celebrity in town who is promoting her new album – ‘I Don’t Like You. I’m Rich. Unlike you’. The scene highlights how ridiculous crazy fans can be.

The play received much positive feedback, with several parents responding; “it was hilarious and funny,” and, “a great take on modern society and how we over-exaggerate unnecessary news; in a hilarious way!”

The students learned a lot about the level of organisation that goes on behind the scenes, such as props, costumes and set pieces need to be well strategically positioned in the wings so that set changes can be seamless.

We are excited about our end-of-year show which will be a combined production with Ms. Bercinskas’s Year 9 Drama class, towards the end of Term Four.
