Weekly Wellbeing: Mental Health Awareness Week!

Ms J Lach —

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week, which is a nationwide event. Read below to see how you can get involved both in and out of school.

Next week is National Mental Health Awareness Week. During this time, the Student Wellbeing Committee is wanting to draw attention to the many ways in which we can support ourselves and one another to reach our own Hauora (spiritual, mental, social and physical wellbeing). To achieve this, the group has arranged for an assortment of school-based activities and displays to help promote thinking and discussion. Be sure to check out some of the nationally-organised activities too, which are listed below.

If you want to learn more about Hauora and Te Whare Tapa Wha, including a simple method for how you can reflect on your own wellbeing, check out the video below:

School-based Activities:

  • Form time Kahoot! - test your knowledge about mental health in our Form Time Kahoot! challenge

  • Girton Wellbeing Wall (all week) - have a look at the displays to learn about what we as a school find important about our wellbeing. Displays include:

  • Wellbeing Tree - see the summary of responses from our online student survey.
  • What helps our Wellbeing? - see the responses from the Form Time activity about our favourite ways to look after our Hauora.
  • How to be Supportive - dos and don’ts of supporting someone
  • Gratitude Wall - what can we be thankful for?
  • Wellbeing Challenges - get some ideas and challenge yourself to look after your wellbeing this week.
  • Compliment Cards - grab a compliment card and share it with someone (extra credit if it’s someone you aren’t friends with)!

  • Bird Bath Lawn picnic (Thursday lunchtime) - bring a blanket, food, music and speakers and let’s gather (at 1 metre apart) on the Bird Bath Lawn to share our lunch, reconnect with one another before the break, and spend some time outside in the garden.

  • Wellbeing Chatterbox - use the ‘chatterbox’ game to connect with friends and family to learn more about what keeps them feeling good and functioning well (see your form teacher for a copy of this).
