Junior Sports Week

Miss Turnbull —

An event run by Otago Secondary School Sports Association. Targeting the fun and enjoyment factor of participating in sport 5 days of sporting options are played at various venues around Dunedin.

Columba College entered four Junior A Sports Teams to compete against other schools in our region and across Otago.

Monday was Handball held at the indoor Edgar Centre facility.  Columba College had their Junior A Team attend the event along with Year 13 student coaches Sophie Strathern and Arna Finnerty. Handball is a relatively new sport to our school and these young guns were up against some tough mismatches. Although a 'never give up' attitude and desire to make the most of the day, these rising stars played with heart and put their skills on display.

Tuesday was a familiar sport but with different rules to the traditional game. Slightly less players on the court and nowhere near as much running its - 3x3 Basketball.  Columba's team consisted of Masyn Harrex, Tessa Milton and Brenna Lyons and these three were outstanding on the court. Winning 4 games convincingly and drawing one through pool play the girls were set to play Taieri in the final after not a single point could separate them from the earlier rounds. The showdown was intense, neither team giving an inch to their opposition which showed as the scores remained all tied up for the duration of the game. Although a late serge from the opposition resulted in Columba finishing on the wrong end of a two point victory. Fabulous display of sportsmanship and camaraderie shown by all and the players held their heads high after a fairly successful day of basketball.

Wednesday - saw our Columba Students taking part in Volleyball, also held at the Edgar Centre. Beginning the day against an all boys, Kings High School team and having to play Bayfield boys - winning was always going to be a tough ask. Instead the Columba team focused on improving their own game and aimed to take control of the things within their grip one point at a time. Targeting their individual serves and the three hit, bump, set, spike pattern. Overall a lot of learning took place and it was a great build up for the 2019 South Island Secondary School Championships, taking place next week.

To cap off the week on Thursday, Columba took part in Touch, held at the Kensington Oval. A few injuries crept into the group meaning numbers were slim, but this talented team of stars made it through to the final for the Junior A Girls grade. Opposing a full strength St Hilda's side, Columba held their own right until the final whistle, remaining neck and neck with their frenemies for the majority of the game. Unfortunately fitness became the biggest factor, having minimal subs and a slightly less experienced squad, contributed to the narrow loss. All that combined with the amount of running in the previous 3 games took its toll on the doves but all tanks were empty and we couldn't be more proud of what this group demonstrated throughout the day.

All athletes showed their excitement to participate in the one off, day-long competitions, representing the dove with pride. Well done!
