Hannah Clarke, student leader of Columba’s Enviroclub and our Environment Prefect, decided she would not waste any opportunities during lockdown, so she applied for the Dunedin City Council’s Waste Minimisation Community Project/Initiative grant.

Earlier this month, Hannah was informed that her application had been successful and that the school is being awarded over $3,000 to go towards several recycling bins that will be set up around high-waste areas. The money will also go towards removal costs.

The bins are to ensure that students have easy access to recycling options, and therefore will be less likely to place recyclable objects into general waste bins. 

Hannah and the Enviroclub plan to develop an education programme for the school as well, so that students know how to use the bins effectively in order to reduce waste on campus. Hannah is looking towards applying for another grant to develop possible compost facilities in the future.
