Le Quesnoy Project

Ms Riethmaier —

Our Citizenship Prefect, Amy Waldburger, has joined forces with a former Columba student and John McGlashan College, Aidan Hung, to raise funds to support former Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Don McKinnon, and The NZ War Memorial Trust in their efforts to create a museum in Le Quesnoy in the north of France.

In November 1918 New Zealand soldiers managed to scale the walls surrounding Le Quesnoy and rescue the town from German occupation. There was no loss of civilian life but over a hundred New Zealand soldiers were killed in the attack, and the proposed museum is to commemorate their sacrifice and cement the ties between New Zealand the citizens of Le Quesnoy.

Aidan organised the Churros van to come to John McGlashan and then to Columba, with a percentage of the proceeds going to this project. The Student Council has also approved a Mufti Day later this term to help support Sir Don McKinnon’s mission and we hope to host him at an assembly when he is next in Dunedin.
