2020 Handball Highlights

Mrs G Beardmore —

Congratulations to our Columba College Senior A Handball team for coming second in the tightly contested Senior A Division of the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association Handball Competition.

Columba had an extremely successful handball season with three teams entered in the 2020 local school competition, either competitively or socially. The Columba College Senior A team has done particularly well this season, regularly beating St. Hilda's and Logan Park High School to make the final against Kavanagh College earlier this week. The final match of the competition produced some wonderful play, with both Kavanagh and Columba showing outstanding defence to keep the game scoreless and locked up at nil all for the first period of play.

After a number of goal attempts in the first half, both teams managed to break the steely defence and score plenty of goals at the start of the second half. After a valiant effort, Columba eventually went down by 8 goals to 4, however, Columba should be extremely proud of the way they played against a much more experienced team. Well done, girls!

For anyone interested in watching a short highlights video of the final match, OSSSA has uploaded a video to their Facebook page, and this can be accessed through the following link:

Congratulations to all Columba College Handball players on a great season. The sport is certainly growing in popularity across many schools, and we encourage any students interested in playing Handball in 2021 to have a chat with our Director of Sport, Miss Dayna Turnbull.

A big thank you to Miss Ashley Wilson for putting together this article, and for being the T.I.C of Handball this season. Without our wonderful teaching staff volunteering to manage all the different sports on offer at Columba, the students would not be given as many opportunities to play as they do. Thank you for the time and energy you all put in - it is greatly appreciated!
