Peer Support

Ms T Andrew —

Peer support is a special tradition in which older students get to know and support younger, and often new Year 7 and 9 students.

Traditionally starting at the beginning of the year, Peer Support is led by Year 13 students teamed up with Year 9 students, and Year 12 students with Year 7 students.

A variety of interruptions meant this year's group started their journey through the third term with a group of dedicated and fun peer supporters. Every other week they meet and talk; spending time together to play interactive word games, to have fun and get to know one another.

The idea being that a relationship is formed and the older students are like a ‘big sister’ mentor and someone for the younger ones to look up to and go to should they need to talk or get some advice/support.

This peer support is very valuable and this year’s group is exceptionally dedicated, kind and fun for our Year 9s and 7s. The girls look engaged and enjoying themselves and, as Mrs Sinclair and I walk around, we feel the value and aroha of this special activity.

We hope eventually the Year 7 and 9s ,as they grow and become young adults, will be inspired to take this role on in the future to nurture and encourage those younger than themselves.

Lola from Year 9, a new boarder this year, said she has so much fun and feels included in a caring group.

I have heard other comments like, "I thought the Year 13's were a bit scary, but they are just like big sisters and lots of fun."

I think the Year 13s also look like they are enjoying this precious experience as much as the younger ones.

A place to belong is essential for all our wellbeing - young and old in our communities.

Thank you so much for all the time and care our Year 12 and13s have put into this time for our younger students, ka pa!!
