Otago Volleyball Championships

Miss Turnbull —

The Otago 'Junior' Secondary School Volleyball Championships were held last Friday and Saturday, at the Edgar Centre. Both Columba’s Junior A and B teams competed in this event.

Overall, our B team had a fun tournament full of learning, and it provided a good opportunity for a team of new players to gain valuable competitive experience. They played a lot of quality Volleyball throughout but lacked the size to compete against the best of our region, resulting in a 12th place finish.

The highlight of the tournament for the A team was a three-set thriller against eventual winners Mt Aspiring College. Unfortunately, battling with injury and struggling to find consistency, meant that they would miss out on the semi-finals and have to settle for 6th place.

The silver lining for both teams is a bright future, with a very strong group of year 9 players who will return next year and a handful of talented year 10 girls whom will graduate into the senior level. Both teams now look to the biggest part of their season, and will head to Christchurch for the South Island Championships next week.

Best of luck to all involved, we will be cheering you on from afar and hope you can finish your 2019 volleyball campaign off well.
