Winter Tournament Week

Miss Dayna Turnbull —

Columba's top teams travelled the length and breadth of the country to compete in South Island and national winter secondary school sports events.

Columba's Hockey First Eleven were in the top New Zealand Federation Cup/Marie Fry tournament and finished pool play strongly gaining a spot in the top 16 after two days' play.

They progressed on to fight for final spots within that group and ended the week in a commendable 15th place.

One thing is for sure; their position in Federation Cup for 2018 is secure and they have finished the highest Columba has ever finished in history of hockey at our College, placing in the top 4 hockey schools in the South Island.

First Eleven Football gained a 4th place at the Invercargill Satellite tournament. Mikayla Gray was voted MVP and she was the team’s top goal scorer with 8 total. Charlotte Hayes, Alice Young and Grace Macbeth were celebrated for also adding a goal each to the board for Columba College.

The Senior A Netball team finished in 4th position in Christchurch at the South Island tournament. Making the semi finals for the first time in school history, this talented group of athletes had a never say die attitude which drove them to their success. Coached by Megan Graamans and Lauren Piebenga the team has trained hard throughout the season and thoroughly deserve this accolade.

Senior A Basketball played South Island campaign in Dunedin. The team rose to the challenge of the high calibre teams, missing a few players to the netball tournament, but pushing through with only seven students on the roster. The passion and commitment was outstanding, their best game was against Avonside where Columba claimed the win in a nail biter.  We had a 12th place finish in the tournament but a great year of basketball across the board for all 13 of our teams.

Columba College Senior A Team of novice curlers claimed 3rd place at the recent South Island Championships held in Dunedin.  This recognition comes of the back of their 2nd place honours in the Otago Secondary School Competition losing narrowly in the final to 3 time champions John McGlashan College.

The team would like to thank Simon Noble for his coaching and support throughout this beginning season and will look to progress further next year with the experience they have gained.
