Rugby Exchange

Miss D Turnbull —

It was an incredibly tight contest between Columba College and Southland Girls' First XV on Monday night during the annual inter-school rugby matchup.

It was a seesaw match that had multiple lead changes throughout. Columba gained a 12-10 halftime advantage, scoring two tries and converting one through the boot of Madison Flutey.

The first try was scored by Southland to go up 5-0 after they dominated position and territory for the best part of 20 minutes. Following this early lead came a kicking charge down from Year 10 Charli Sinclair who then chased the loose ball to claim our first points on the scoreboard. Some quick thinking from Year 11 Pip Eason helped Columba build their lead after a pick-and-go opportunity saw her score a big runaway. Southland closed the gap just before halftime due to some full-field pressure and a little luck diving on the loose ball in the in-goal.

In the second half, Southland claimed the first points adding a try to their score taking them to a 15-12 lead. Columba hit back quickly to move back on top after a try was awarded to Year 13 Mia Stout. With 1 minute to go and Southland camped firmly in Columba's 22, they took full advantage of an overlap and forced their way into the corner using their size to cross the line. 20 seconds left and the ref announced we had time to take the kickoff. A slight fumble from the opposition player gave Columba possession back followed by some magic hands by Year 9 debutante, Lula Joseph. Captain fantastic stepped up and demanded the ball, brushing off defenders and striding powerfully to dot down and claim a 22-20 victory for the home team. What a thrilling finish to the evenly matched contest; great sportswomanship was shown by all and everyone enjoyed a post-match pizza dinner.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to support the team and our coaching staff for all their guidance. We are looking forward to next year already!
