QUAD 2020

Miss D Turnbull —

260 student athletes, 22 officials, 38 management and a whole bunch of supporters gathered in Dunedin as Columba College hosted the winter quadrangular tournament!

On Monday 3 August - Tuesday 4th August in what appeared to be two stellar Dunedin days, Columba hosted three visiting schools from Christchurch, Timaru and Dunedin.

In what began as an unprecedented year with many unknowns, the term three, week three annual Quad Exchange turned out to be one for the record books...... involving Craighead, Columba, St Hilda's and St Margaret's - this years event doubled in size from the usual 148 athletes to this special 2020 event of 260 students. From the traditional four sports of badminton, debating, hockey and netball to the addition of basketball and football, it truly was a spectacular inter-school across all codes.

As usual fierce competition and strong sportsmanship was shown throughout, resulting in tightly contested games with many draws and tiebreakers. Overall pleasing scores for our Columba student athletes, gaining 1st in Badminton, 1st in debating, 2nd equal in hockey and 3rd in netball, as we fought to keep the shield for a 4th consecutive year.

Basketball had many injuries/absent players and in the end just fielding a full team became the goal, eventually finishing 4th. Whereas new sport, Football made a name for themselves with 2 impressive wins and a narrow, final-minute loss to local rivals St Hilda's, ending in 2nd place overall.

After considering a cancellation year to pushing on and adding two sports, we were incredibly grateful to be able to continue on with this interschool tradition in what has been, yet another closely contested and highly competitive tournament.

Overall Results:

1ST – St Margarets College (14 Points)

2ND – Columba College (13 Points)

3RD – St Hilda’s Collegiate (9 points)

4TH - Craighead Diocesan (7 Points)

Columba College Most Valuable Player Awards for each sport;

Badminton – ZoeRevell-Lynch
Basketball – Jenna Paterson
Debating – Isobel Fraser
Football – Hayley Julian
Hockey – Nikita Peterson-Solomon
Netball – Harriett Cuttance

Columba College would like to thank all the supporters, umpires, referees, management and staff for making the event possible. Special mention to Lou's Pantry, Precinct and Cibus Catering for supplying the food throughout the exchange, it was absolutely delicious and appreciated by all.

We are proud of all those involved, you have performed incredibly well for our College and look forward to travelling to Christchurch for the 2021 Quadrangular Tournament to be hosted by St Margaret's College.
