Sports Awards 2020

Miss D Turnbull —

On Thursday 22 October, Columba College held their annual Sports Awards Evening in the Marsh Sports Centre.

The stage was set!

Sports awards 2020 can be summarised by a wonderful night had by all. After some big hours put in by our wonderful staff and students, the wider school community gathered in the Marsh Sports Centre to celebrate a truly phenomenal year in sport.

We saw a record number of students receiving awards, with a particular emphasis on Year 7 and 8 achievers, juniors in senior teams and nationally recognised athletes. In a year we thought was written off for group activities we were proud to honour the determination and resilience of our school. In this sporting season while managing Covid-19 requirements we were able to safely and successfully host inter-school events and send many teams to national tournaments, while they may have not been quite the norm, it is a huge feat to pull off and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the staff, coaches and families for their tireless dedication to providing our athletes with the most opportunities for development possible.

The results from the 2020 Sports Awards reflected this dedication, Maia Joseph was a standout award receiver taking the Sports personality honours voted on by her peers, the Inspire, Strive and Excel Cup for overall leadership and performance as well as the Hilary Sime, Best all-round Sportswomen for 2020 - huge accolades for an incredible talent.

Please see the attached Program for our overall award winners throughout the night and what awards were celebrated.

A special mention goes to Jorja Dinan and Portia Chambers, not only did they both receive awards in their chosen codes, they also provided our halftime entertainment with a beautiful vocal performance of Hallelujah and a unique Maori song.

Once again, thank you for all that made the effort to be present, we had over 380 students, staff, coaches and families attend to celebrate sport here at Columba. I look forward to seeing what 2021 holds for these talented sportswomen and how a small school continues to perform to an elite level both regionally and nationally.
