Measurement

Miss S O'Malley —

The Year 3 children have enjoyed exploring our measurement topic for mathematics this term.

Last week we started with looking at non-standard measurements, which involved the children using parts of their body like their hands and footsteps to measure various items in the playground. This hands-on approach encourages exploration and helps children to develop a basic understanding of measurement concepts.

This week we used a metre ruler to then go and measure these items in the playground. The children enjoyed working together in small groups to check that their estimations were either correct or close to.

Could you use non-standard measurement at home? I wonder how many steps it takes to walk from your bedroom to the kitchen? Estimate your answer first and then measure to see how close you are to your guess.
