Ripper Rugby

Miss Turnbull —

On a wet, windy and muddy Friday, two superstar Year 9 and 10 teams braved the Mosgiel conditions and competed in the Junior Quick Rip Tournament. It was a day loaded with laughs, fun, exceptional skill level and a competitive spirit.

The Year 9 team had an impressive pool play, with convincing wins against Logan Park and East Otago and a draw against Central Southland. This saw them head into the semi finals the top of their pool. The year 10 team had a tougher run in their pool play, drawing with Otago Girls and Eastern/Hargest to be second in their pool. Both teams played extremely well despite the conditions (or because of) and it was to become a square off between the two Columba teams in the semi finals. Energy levels were high heading into the game with the Year 9’s as top seed. Not to be out done, the Year 10's headed into the first half with a flying start and were quickly on the scoreboard. Year 9’s were not going to go down without a fight and returned the score quickly. It truly was a game of 2 halves, but in the end Year 10’s claimed a spot in the final against East Otago. Year 9’s bet Eastern/Hagest to claim 3rd place and the Year 10’s had a brilliant game in the final, showcasing their skills and talent to beat East Otago 6-3 to claim the Quick Rip Champions 2019.

Three of our young rugby superstars Lara McCulloch, Maddy Sullivan and Brenna Lyons donned the unusual colours of green and red, combining with Kaikorai Valley High School in the U/15 tackle grade. All 3 were outstanding and led the KVC team well with their experience and skill. Facing tough opposition from Southland Girls, Aurora/Verdon, Central Southland and Queens they held their own but they were unable to get a win under their belt.

Well done to all the players for a great day out. A special thanks to Mrs Ung for her help on the day and to Mr and Mrs Cowie for their generous and much needed offerings-tarpaulins, towels, blankets and food, and to our other parent supporters. I think it is fair to say we were well entertained for the day by both teams.
