Busy as Bees at Orokonui

Mrs M Small —

The Year 4 class have been studying Bees this term and visited Orokonui Ecosanctuary on Thursday to find out more about our native and introduced bees.

Tahu, the incredible educator based at Orokonui, lead discussions about some of the threats to native bees and explored possible things we could do to help our bees. It was interesting to find out the kiwis like to eat our native bees. We also got to get up close and personal with other insects like weta and stick insects.

On our hike down the Valley Track we discovered which plants our native bees are attracted to. We were accompanied by a variety of native birds on our hike through the ecosanctuary and even got to see the tallest tree in New Zealand.

It was great to have so many parents and grandparents accompanying us on this trip.
