Chamber Music

Mrs S Casbolt —

This weekend, Skyla Murray (Yr 11) is going to Christchurch with her chamber music group, Eccentrioties to compete at the South Island Regionals for the NZCT Chamber Music Contest.

The piano trio is made up of Yr 13 cellist Boudewijn Keenan (OBHS) and Yr 11 pianist Alexander Sun (LPHS). The three will be performing the first, second, and fourth movements of ‘Ahi’ by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. Having won the district round two weeks ago, the group was automatically selected to go to regionals, where they will compete against the other top chamber groups around the country.

The trio have worked together over the past six months, and have learnt and grown together as a group. By pushing themselves as far as possible, they have been able to explore the fiery passages of the piece (‘Ahi’ meaning fiery). They enjoyed playing at the Gala Dinner, which was great preparation for the competition this weekend.

Both Skyla and Boudewijn have also been selected for the National Youth Orchestra, for which they will be flying up to Wellington after the competition. We wish them the best of luck!
