Otago Short Course Swimming Success

Columba College had a number of students compete in the Otago Short Course Championships held in Dunedin at the beginning of July.

Poppy Henderson - female 16 and over

  • 100 Freestyle - 4th (PB)
  • 200 Butterfly - 3rd
  • 200 Freestyle - 2nd
  • 4x50m Free Relay (open) - 3rd
  • 4x50 Medley Relay (open) - 1st

Sophie Wellington - female 11 years

  • 50 Freestyle - 4th (PB)
  • 200 Backstroke - 2nd (6.5 sec PB)
  • 200 Freestyle - 4th (PB)
  • 4x50m Medley Relay (open) - 6th

Gwendolyn Somerville - female 10 years and under

  • 100 Backstroke - 4th
  • 50 Breaststroke - 9th
  • 50 Backstroke - 8th
  • 100 Freestyle - 6th
  • 50 Freestyle - 7th (3 sec PB)
  • 100 Individual Medley - 6th (13 sec PB)
  • 4x50m Medley Relay (open) - 6th

Alice Jefferies - female 11 years

  • 50 Breaststroke - 3rd (5 sec PB)
  • 50 Backstroke - 2nd (PB)
  • 100 Freestyle - 1st (PB)
  • 50 Freestyle - 2nd (PB)
  • 100 Breaststroke - 2nd
  • 200 Freestyle - 2nd (4 sec PB)
  • 4x50 Free Relay (open) - 3rd
  • 4x50 Medley Relay (open) - 3rd

Outstanding swimming was undertaken by all students. We are extremely proud of their effort and commitment as they all achieved many Personal Bests. The competition level is at an incredibly high standard at the moment around the Otago Region which highlights how hard our students are training on a weekly basis. All of the swimmers are showing wonderful determination, dedication, and drive to succeed. Well done to you all.

South Island Results from a few weeks back were:

Ashlea Law - 17-18 year girls

  • 50m Backstroke - 4th
  • 50m Freestyle - 4th

Emma Morton - 16-year girls

  • 100m Individual Medley - 6th
  • 100m Breaststroke - 3rd
  • 50m Breaststroke - 3rd
  • 100m Backstroke - 4th
  • Based on her time in the 100m IM, she was also selected to compete in the 16 and over girls medley skins event which she placed 7th in.

Poppy Henderson - 17-18 year girls

  • 100m Butterfly - 2nd
  • 50m Butterfly - 2nd
  • 50m Freestyle - 3rd

Poppy also competed at the Otago Secondary School Swim Champs at the end of May and gained the following placings in the 15 and over girls age category:

  • 50m Butterfly - 2nd
  • 200m Freestyle - 3rd
  • 100m Butterfly - 1st
  • 200m Butterfly - 1st


It has been a huge couple of months in the pool for our athletes and we would like to wish Emma Morton and Poppy Henderson all the best as they attend the National Swimming Championships in Hamilton later this month.
