Otago U17 and U19 Volleyball pre-National Tournament in Timaru
Columba has five Otago representatives!
Otago’s U17 and U19 teams travelled to Timaru on Sunday 23rd May to compete against Canterbury’s representative teams in a pre-National tournament.
This mini-tournament marked the first time the girls would compete as a team so it was critical preparation for the upcoming National tournament which is to be held in Wellington from the 5th - 7th of June.
The U17s got off to a shaky start in the first game but managed to tighten it up in the second and finish 17-25. The girls started to mesh well and Otago had a good chance to win the third set late in the game with a score of 24-21. Unfortunately, they missed the serve and Canterbury came back to win it.
The U19s won at least one set against Canterbury despite a reduced roster. It was an impressive debut and they will be looking for strong results in Wellington.
The U17 team ran into funding concerns and a trip to Nationals was called off for a period of time. Fortunately, they were able to make things work in the end. However, with recent heavy rains washing away part of the Ashburton bridge their trip is again up in the air as they had planned to drive up to Wellington. If the team is able to get away this weekend, Columba wishes them all the best. We would like to give a special thank you to Taine Grimsey coach of the U17 Otago Volleyball team, who is also a current teacher-trainee here at Columba, Dawn Hope our lovely Office Manager, and Brett Dailey who is our awesome Junior A Basketball coach. Thank you for escorting and driving the girls up and back from Wellington.
Columba College representative players:
