Message from Acting Principal

Ms J Riethmaier —

Tenā koutou katoa

Having retired at the end of 2020 and let my registration lapse in October the following year, I had not expected to be sitting back in the Principal’s chair ever again. Yet here I am, re-registered and filling in as Acting Principal while Mrs Duthie spends Term 2 on a long overdue sabbatical before retiring, and while recruitment is underway for a new Principal.

I had settled quite comfortably into retirement, spending time between Dunedin, our grandchildren in Wellington, and our holiday home in Ophir, but quickly realised what a privilege it is to have been invited back to Columba to cover this period. I am particularly enjoying the interaction with students, staff, the two Boards and the wider Columba whanau. Although some things have changed over the past couple of years, the heart and values of Columba are still very much alive and well and evident in the enthusiasm and dedication shown by all within these four walls. The smiles and the poise of the students I encounter around the school are priceless, and the events of the past two weeks covered in this Newsletter are proof of the outstanding achievements being maintained in academic, sporting and cultural pursuits.

As we come to the end of a busy first term, I wish Mrs Duthie all the best for her sabbatical projects and thank her for the energy and vision she has brought to Columba during her time as Principal. May you all enjoy a blessed and peaceful Easter break with your loved ones and return for Term 2 with renewed energy and commitment.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa,

Ms Jenness Riethmaier

Acting Principal
