Middle Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) and Chinese Language week

Ms I Ding —

To celebrate the 2022 Middle Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) and Chinese Language week from 25th September to 1st October 2022, there are numerous activities arranged at Columba College.

On Week 9, Wednesday through Friday, Year 7 - 13 Chinese students and Columba staff tasted different Yum Cha Chinese food from Papa Chou Chinese restaurant. On offer were steamed BBQ pork buns, prawn dim sim, pork dumplings, vegetarian dumplings and deep-fried squid. Everyone enjoyed their food. The  Year 7 Chinese class made a Yum Cha poster to help everyone understand what Yum Cha is and when to eat it and the Year 8 Chinese class started a China & Food Presentation project this week.

In Week 10, Dunedin Taichi Club teachers are invited to Columba College to teach the Year 0-6 students and the Year 7-13 Chinese classes Taichi. Taichi is a type of Chinese martial arts that creates good health and wellbeing through safe and enjoyable exercise. Year 7 to 13 form classes will also play a 'General Information about China' Kahoot game and the top 3 winners will win Chinese fortune cookies.

Finally, I’d like to share this community news. On Sunday 25th Sep from 12.30-3pm, Dunedin’s Chinese community welcomes you to join in the celebration at Chinese Garden Lan Yuan. Festivities will open with lion dancing and speeches by the Deputy Chinese Consul-General Zhai Xingfu, His Worship the Mayor of Dunedin Aaron Hawkins, and Malcolm Wong ONZM, and will then continue with vibrant music, dance and Tai Chi performances throughout the afternoon.
