Time to Pause

Dr J Macleod —

I don’t know about you, but I seem to spend a lot of time thinking about the future: what I need to do next, trying to figure out plans. I think about the past a bit, although sometimes that’s when I’m feeling grumpy. I don’t always spend my time just being present, here and now.

Since the lockdown was announced, in the newsletter and in the video Chapels, we’ve reflected on what’s been going on around us, the changes we’ve experienced, how we might be feeling, and what we might need to do.

Today, I just want us to pause; to take the time to notice things around us. The world isn’t perfect, nor are we, but let’s take the time to appreciate what’s there: the natural environment, the beautiful grounds of this school, the blessing of an education or a job, being able to see friends, being part of a community.

The reading we’ve just heard (Psalm 118:1, 5, 24, 29) tells us that today is a day that God has given us. It’s a gift. Being alive and in this day is something to be glad about. The psalms also remind us that gifts have a giver and it’s right to say thank you.

As you go about the rest of your day, take time to notice the little things around you. Every good gift has been given by a God who loves you.
