Columba College —

Columba College has consistently remained one of New Zealand’s top performing secondary schools.

Columba College offers a wide range of subjects where students are afforded flexibility in their chosen areas of study. We also work hard to ensure that our International Students are able to achieve their potential alongside their fellow students whose native language is English.

In addition to each International Student being individually assessed and provided the ESOL support needed where necessary, the Assistant Principal reviews the year level curriculum appropriate for each student. With input from the International Department and the College’s teachers, the Assistant Principal prepares each student timetable, monitors attendance daily, and tracks academic performance and English proficiency. She will intercede on her behalf when necessary.

The Years 7 and 8 curriculum is closely aligned with the secondary curriculum. In Years 9-13 students receive more choice with the subjects they would like to study towards their NCEA or University Entrance qualifications.

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the main national qualification for secondary school students in New Zealand. NCEA is recognised by employers, and used for selection by universities and polytechnics, both in New Zealand and overseas. Alternatively, many girls may work towards achieving the necessary qualifications to gain admission to their university of first choice back home or in the United Kingdom, North America and Australia. 

Columba College’s International students are strong performers in NCEA, often obtaining merit and excellence endorsements for high achievement.

The International staff will help girls who need to arrange examinations. They will also assist with organising documentation and support when International students apply for entrance to a tertiary institution.

In addition to the academic opportunities Columba College offers, there are a range of co-curricular and community activities students can take part in. Participation in these activities are noted and included in curriculum vitae prepared for attachment to university applications.
