Geography: Can the Taieri Plains be used sustainably?

Mrs Wafer —

The Year 11 Geography classes travelled out to the Taieri Plains to investigate how dairy farmers use their land sustainably.

Columba College Geography classes have been visiting The Gums dairy farm since 1989!  While the context of our visit has changed over the years, we continue to be warmly welcomed by the Aitken family to their property.  This year our students ranged from self-confessed city-slickers, to those who feel right at home in the rural setting.

Students were shown the basics of the milking process, visited the (very cute) calves, and investigated what The Gums do to ensure their land will be able to be farmed well into the future.

Students were impressed with the waste minimisation, the recycling and positive enhancements to the environment, such as riparian planting of natives.

We appreciate the time taken by Andrew to show our classes around and give them this fabulous experience.
