All-Columba final at Southland Tennis Open

Mrs G Beardmore —

Over the past few years, tennis at Columba College has been on the rise, and the performance of our top-ranked students at the recent Southland Tennis Open highlights the calibre of players that the school has!

Columba College students, Erin and Aminah, traveled to Southland last weekend to compete in the ILT Southland Open Tennis Championships. Only a small field entered, but both Erin and Aminah were challenged on their way to the final. Each came from a set down before clinching third-set victories over opposition players Katy and Mavis respectively.

The final was another close affair, with both players trading breaks before Aminah got ahead 5-3 with a chance to serve for the set. Erin's tenacity snuffed out Aminah's set points and a long deuce game eventually went the way of Erin to put the match back on serve. Several further close games were contested as the first set entered a deciding tie-breaker that saw Aminah take an early small lead which she held onto to win the first set. The second set was more one-sided on the scoreboard but still closely contested nonetheless - Aminah winning the final 7-6(3), 6-1 to join the long list of previous title winners spanning back to the 1940s.

Congratulations to both Aminah and Erin on representing your school and region with professionalism and pride! Well done. We are very proud of you both!
