South Island Surf Lifesaving Competition

Miss M Ozanne —

Six girls from Columba competed in the South Island Surf Lifesaving competition at Warrington last weekend.

This involves board, swim and surf ski races in the ocean, sprints and relays on the sand and 4 man canoe races through the surf plus much more. On Saturday the grey skies, rain, small waves and a much too friendly sea lion made for uncomfortable race conditions. But the girls pulled through with an impressive number of medals, which is especially hard to do against the Christchurch teams who are well known for their abilities in surf. In addition to that Warrington Surf Club took the title of the best canoe club in the South Island from a Christchurch club and St Clair came an overall second in the South Island.
