Intermediate School success at the Otago Museum Wildlife photography competition

Mrs A Walker —

As part of the Year 8 camp to Deep Cove in February, the girls were encouraged to take photos of the natural environment, according to the categories for the Otago Wildlife photo competition.

Before our departure for camp a professional photographer, Kimberley Cheyne, came to school to give the girls some tips for taking good shots. The girls were keen to put what they learnt from Kim into practice. Almost all of the girls contributed photos in each category for our school Year 8 photo competition and this was judged by Ms Kezia Fields (Columba College’s photography teacher).

Girls were encouraged to enter their photos into the Museum competition and three girls, Grace Hill, Mia Revell-Lynch and Anya Rhodes were invited to the prize giving on Saturday 30 March. At the prize giving Grace Hill was 'highly commended' (runner up) for her photo “Look at me, Weka.” Her prize was a $50 print voucher for Jonathan’s Photo Warehouse and 2 double passes to the Otago Museum. Mia and Anya’s photos have been included in the display at the museum for the public to view. A Year 7 student, Frankie McAuliffe, won 1st Prize in the U14 Plant category, so we extend our congratulations to her also. Her prize was a $100 printing voucher for Jonathan’s Photo Warehouse and a family pass for the Orokonui Sanctuary.

The girls did so well with their photos considering there were 2100 entries in total and well done to everyone who submitted photos to the competition.
