Our Year 13 students were privileged to hear Dr. Sanjana Hattotuwa, Research Fellow on The Disinformation Project, talk about issues around disinformation in our society. Joining students at John McGlashan College, he encouraged us to consider the way online media platforms many of our youth are on, and the media streams they consume, show alarming rates of disinformation. He acknowledged how we are facing great change with the rapid advances in technology, making it more difficult than ever to decipher what is the truth. His sage advice to our young people was to pause before we react to the media we engage with, taking care to ensure our sources are credible, to consider the reaction the source provokes in us, and considering carefully what we do with the information in our response.
