The Black Hand

Ms I Bercinskas —

Written by Mademoiselle Gardiner and performed by Level 1 Drama

Level 1 Drama performed devised versions of The Black Hand, a retelling of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne. The Unification (popularly known as the Black Hand) was a secret military society formed in 1901 by officers in the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia. The Archduke’s assassination is often cited as the excuse that started a chain of events that led to World War 1 (WW1). Level 1 Drama’s first Internal involves devising Wilfred Owen’s poem Dulce et Decorum est and reimaging it in a scene from WW1 using drama techniques.

Level 1 students studied The Black Hand and crafted pieces for the edification and entertainment of Level 1 French, performing them in a balmy 26 degrees on Tuesday. Both classes seemed to genuinely enjoy the drama, spectacle, and improvisation as the Archduke and his wife were set upon outside the Marsh Sports Centre, Girton, on the tennis court, and finally on the lawn. Here, they were removed in an untimely manner by their assassin, Gavrilo Princip, who subsequently succumbed to tuberculosis just opposite Mr Hudson’s workshop.

Actors: Pyper Arnold, Faith Courtney, Zoe Eckhoff, Ashley Miller, Brie Monk, Skyla Murray, Laura Sammut, Zara Thomson.
