The South Island Secondary School Triathlon & Duathlon Champs were held at Friendly Bay in Oamaru on 3 March 2024. Age groups competing in the event were the Senior (U19), Intermediate (U16), and Junior (U14), with the Junior division including school-aged athletes in Years 7 & 8.

Columba had two individual athletes take part in the South Island Secondary Schools Triathlon last Sunday in Oamaru. Madeleine (Year 7) competed in the U14 junior division and finished the race in 16th place, with a time of 1 hour and 2 minutes. This was a really impressive performance over a 300m swim, 12km bike, and 2.5km run against a very competitive field. Madeleine had a lot of fun and achieved some important process goals, including how to finish the bike leg when your pedal has fallen off, running her bike for the last 1.5km of the cycle leg! Well done, Madeleine!

Melanie (Year 12) entered the U19 senior division and successfully completed the 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km in a time of 1 hour and 9 minutes, gaining her a well-earned 2nd place overall! Melanie also managed to shave 10 minutes off her personal best time over this distance. Amazing work, Melanie.
