Year 5 and 6 Camp

Mrs Hogg —

In the second week of term four, Year 5 and 6 students went to Berwick Lodge. The camp is located about 45 kilometres south of Dunedin. The students made many wonderful memories and had amazing experiences there.

We set out to Berwick at 9 o’clock on Wednesday 22 October. When we got there we unpacked and met the Camp Warden, Debbie. We were also introduced to Evan our Adventure Masters leader who taught us about the camp, the activities, and how to keep safe.

First we went on an orientation walk around the camp and the surrounding area. Later that day we went on the “Confidence Course” a large adventure playground, full of fun activities. That night, some of the students went on the night time bush walk, where we were educated about dangerous poisons and animal traps.

The next day we got up at 7.00 am, had breakfast, and got ready for Search and Rescue. This activity entailed us going around the camp area with maps and radios, looking for two of the parents who had hidden out in the bushes. Once we found them, we had to carry them out on stretchers to the lodge. We did lots of other fun activities that day, including Abseiling, Tree climbing and the Crazy Swing.

On the third day, after cleaning our cabins, we did Archery, Target Shooting, and Evan took four students at a time to ride on the back of a quad bike. Finally we did some activities on the Confidence Course. After that we thanked and said goodbye to Evan, Debbie and our wonderful parent helpers. Finally we got on the bus and headed back to school.

The time we spent at camp was an amazing experience, and we will treasure, and remember it forever.
