Why Does Bad Stuff Happen?

Dr J Macleod —

Year 7 and 8 students have been doing a Religious Studies unit titled 'Why does bad stuff happen?' Through the unit, we looked at a range of responses to this question. In our final lesson, students had the opportunity to respond through a selection of activities in a 'prayer space'.

1. We can be grateful for the good stuff.

2. We can grow from the bad stuff. Although bad stuff is bad, God can bring good out of it. We can learn from our mistakes. We can develop compassion, strength and perseverance through challenging situations.

3. We can ask for help. We can ask for help from trusted people. We can ask God to help and to be at work in the world.

4. We can say 'sorry' for the things we've done. It is important to acknowledge our part in bad stuff. Because of what Jesus has done, God promises to forgive us when we say sorry.

Students could write a confidential note, screw it up, and put it in the paper bag. The bag and its contents were burnt at the end of the day. — Image by: Dr J Macleod
