Celebrating Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori

Mrs Marion Hogg —

The Junior School collaborated to produce some stunning art to mark Māori Language Week.

The Years 0, 1 and 6 classes worked together over four weeks to create a mural of 43 well-known Māori legends which they finished during Māori Language Week.

The senior children did the drawings and the junior children coloured them in with pastel, which we then washed over with dye.

The students have created a book of the legends and following tradition, are learning to retell them orally in their own words. It took careful work to complete the kowhaiwhai border.

Can you recognise the legends from the mural?

Continuing with the collaboration,  Years 3 and 5 worked together to produce a Māori Cloak which is on display in the Library.
