Otago Secondary Schools Netball Championships

Ms Beardmore —

On Sunday 9th and Monday 10th June, Columba College Senior A, Senior B, 10A and 9A netball teams participated in the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Championships (Edgar Centre, Dunedin).

As usual this annual tournament did not fail to deliver, with two days of high quality, competitive netball games seen across all grades. Overall Columba had some fantastic results, with our 9A team claiming second overall in the junior grade, and our 10A team narrowly losing their semi-final by two goals after an incredible fourth-quarter fight back. This team then went on to claim the bronze medal in the playoff for 3rd/4th. Our Senior B team had a strong tournament, finishing 5th in the senior grade, and showing good improvement across every game.

Our Columba College Senior A team made it to the final again this year, and triumphed with an impressive three goal win over Dunedin rivals St. Hilda's Collegiate. It was definitely a game of two halves, all tied up at the end of the first quarter highlighting yet again, that there is minimal separating these two quality teams. As usual during these tightly contested matches, a very physical battle was evident. By half time St. Hilda's had edged ahead by three goals, but a courageous and dominant third quarter by Columba enabled them to pull back the lead and steam ahead to gain a 21-15 advantage going into the final quarter. With a lot of goal-for-goal play, Columba Senior A played smart netball to hold off their opposition and claim an historic and impressive victory! Well done!

An extremely well run event this year, and certainly a highlight on the netball calendar. Columba College would like to thank all the Coaches, Managers and parent supporters who helped make this tournament a huge success for our school.
