Haere mai te taura i te Reo Māori. We recently celebrated Māori language week, giving us the opportunity to reflect on the privilege it is to teach and learn another of our national languages here at Columba. 

The Junior School collaborated to produce some stunning art to mark Māori Language Week. 

The Year 2 and 4 classes joined together to create a collaborative piece of art during Māori Language Week.

On Monday18 September, Year 9Be went to the University to learn about analysing films.

Students have been both busy and very successful in the Languages Department this term.

Congratulations to Molly Crighton in Year 12 for winning the Senior 2017 WriteNow Poetry Competition for Dunedin secondary school students, judged by Lynley Edmeades.

What a dream and privilege it is to wear the silver fern and play for your country in the sport you love. For Maia Joseph and Meg Sycamore this honour happened in Australia recently as they took on the State champs with the NZ U16 Girls Touch Team.

Columba's top teams travelled the length and breadth of the country to compete in South Island and national winter secondary school sports events. 

Big honours must go to Caitlin Deans who received 6 Open Gold Medals and broke a South Island Record in the 100m Backstroke. 

Our Year 6 'technologists' have worked hard to create a tie dyed t-shirt. 

The Parent's Association organised for class artwork to be sent away and put onto a mug as a Year 0-6 Junior School fundraiser.

Columba's orchestra performed successfully at the Secondary Schools Music Festival.

Year 6 students are excited to receive the new sports equipment the Junior School won by having the highest number of participants in the Walk n Wheel week held by Sport Otago earlier in the year. 

Three children from Miss Spencer’s class were fortunate to take part in the Buzz Off Technology event at Dunedin Baptist Church on Friday 15 September. 

Earlier this term, 76 Columba College Chinese language students took part in the New Zealand Chinese Calligraphy Competition organised by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury and the International Languages Exchanges and Pathways. 

With furrowed brows, earnest whispering and feverish activity dedicated groups of computer programmers, engineers and support crew enthusiastically competed in this year’s Robocup competitions. 

Saskia Learmonth (Year 8) joined Columba at the start of Term 3 and is a very talented mountain bike rider.

On Tuesday 29 August, we held our annual exchange with our Year 7 & 8 hockey, netball and basketball teams playing against Balmacewen Intermediate. 

Our junior teams have wrapped up a great season. 

The Yr 5/6 Columba College Raptors finished a perfect season, remaining unbeaten in the top grade with an impressive display of skill and sportsmanship throughout the season.

The Otago Primary and Intermediate School’s Cross Country Championships was held in very wintry conditions on Friday 1 September. The course was tough, very muddy and all races were run at a very fast pace.

Well done to Amelia Loudon who came second overall in NZ Cross Country Ski Champs held at the Snow Farm in September. 

On Tuesday 19 September at 1.00pm the Junior School pupils rang bells to welcome the first albatross to arrive back this season. 

Jasmine Potter (Year 3) was selected to play the part of the Flower Girl in the recent ballet production of Romeo and Juliet.

Amelia Willis from Year 12 has won the prestigious Arthur Burns Memorial Prize for her extensive historical research on the Taieri this year. 

Columba College experiences great success at the Tournament of Minds regional competition held at St Andrews, Christchurch. 

Debating at Columba this year has seen unprecedented achievements made by many girls throughout all year levels.
