German Language Week

Ms K YelavichApril 11, 2024

To celebrate, the Year 10s created short videos about basic German Language and Culture to share with the rest of the school during form times and at assembly.

These included how to introduce yourself in German, how to greet and farewell someone, saying how you are, an introduction to some German brands that you might not have known were German.

In class, the year 9 and 10s explored words that don’t have an English translation. A couple of favourites were:

Sturmfrei” which literally means: “storm free”.

This is the situation, which arises when your parents/housemates are away, you have the place to yourself and you can do what you want!

Dreikäsehoch” which means “three cheeses high.”

This is a term for a child or person who is vertically challenged. They are described as only being “three cheese high.”

To finish off the week, the Senior German class was invited to share in Kaffee und Kuchen - coffee and cake - with the Year 11 German class at John McGlashan. Both the girls and the boys baked cakes to bring along. Whilst enjoying the delicious food, the students were able to engage in German conversation with students of a similar language level. This was such a success that the girls have extended an invitation to the John McGlashan boys to join us next term for cake and conversation.
