Gymnastics in action! by Mrs Pollard

Year 2 and 3 have had a fun week of learning for our last week of Term 1

Ms S O'MalleyApril 10, 2024

On Monday we joined together with the Year 1 and 2 class for a fun STEM Lego Challenge, (STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). We heard the tale of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” and thought about how to cross the river safely. We came up with ideas like swimming and jumping over rocks or fallen trees. But we decided a zip line over the river would be a super cool and troll-proof plan! Our job was to build a Lego creation that could zip down the line without breaking or going too fast. Here are some photos of our designs and our creations in action, zipping down the line!

On Wednesday we experimented with the slow cooker and baked some chocolate chip biscuits. We had the best smell in our classroom, which wafted throughout the building, making for some very hungry children! The final verdict from the class - “they taste delicious!” The children made a mini recipe book with the step by step instructions, I wonder if they will try the recipe at home?

This week we also finished off our Strand Maths Unit - Statistics! Each child got a small packet of m&ms to sort into groups, collecting data in the form of a tally chart and bar graph. The best part? We got to eat our maths at the end!

We also had our Physical Education class on Wednesday where the children enjoyed a gymnastics session. We have lots of children in our class who are a part of the Dunedin Gymnastics Academy, so we relied on their expertise to lead small groups and help the class with their techniques to perform handstands, forward rolls and cartwheels. Next term we are going to learn some Jujitsu and Karate moves from Ted and Frankie.

This week we also talked about ANZAC and the significance of celebrating it. We read the story ‘Torty and The Soldier’ and then created some art that would help us to remember our soldiers. On Thursday we made some ANZAC biscuits in class in our slow cooker, the children have been sent home with a recipe, perhaps you could try this at home.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.
