Year 8 Camp: Deep Cove 2024

Mrs S GravesApril 9, 2024

Year 8 students experienced a wide range of activities during their recent camp at Deep Cove, Patea / Doubtful Sound, Fiordland.

Outdoor education instructors, Dave 'Hedgehog' den Hertog and Craig Robinson accompanied the group and guided the students through many activities including team building and bush safety. The students had the opportunity to go fishing, spy on glow worms, identify local flora and fauna, cross bridges and streams, build bivouacs, hike to a waterfall, and immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings of Patea / Doubtful Sound. A highlight for some of our students was the boat cruise to the Tasman Sea where they got close-up views of waterfalls, dolphins and baby seals. The brief time spent on the Tasman Sea was just long enough for everyone to experience the wave motion!

Students made the most of every moment, rising bright and early and exploring and adventuring all day. They were incredibly well fed thanks to Lou's Kitchen meals. The students arrived home safely in time for a restful Easter holiday. The students were ‘cell phone free’ for the camp. This meant that they communicated and engaged with each other face-to-face. We were fortunate to have Greg North and Mrs MacKay as our photographers. The images have been collated into an exceptional short film and series of images that the students can access.

We are grateful for the assistance of a very supportive and vibrant group of parent helpers: Greg North, Ashleigh Lowe, Louise Tilyard, Patrick Hussey, Ohad Dar and Andrew Smith. Thanks also to the staff members, Mrs de Vos, Ms Martin and Mrs MacKay, who all played a vital role in the camp's success.
