Principal's Pinnacles

Mrs C NicolApril 11, 2024

As we come to the end of an 11 week term, I look back at all that has happened in this short space of time in the College and I am truely amazed. The highlight for me was the Fair last Saturday, our first since 2019. We are really grateful to the Parents Association, volunteers, staff and students who made this day such a success, as well as to the wider community for your support. For more about the fair, including the grand sum raised, please see the fair article.

On Sunday afternoon, I had the privilege of attending the International Departments' Baking Competition.  The decorative and technical skills evident in the array of cakes and cupcakes were very impressive.  It was a pleasure to sample some of the winning cakes and meet with our International students and their host families.

This occasion was also an opportunity to farewell Dr Sally Henderson who has worked with much aroha in our ESOL department for the past 8 years.  Her warmth and expertise will be sadly missed, but we are delighted that her role at the University has grown.  We were also sad to farewell Mrs Gretchen Beardmore our Sports Administrator this week. She has facilitated a plethora of opportunities for our students in sport and been an encouragement on the sidelines of countless games.  We wish her well in her new role at Trinity.

Last night, I was treated to some outstanding performances at our inaugural NCEA Music Concert.  As part of being assessed for music performance achievement standards at levels 1-3, the students need an audience.  It was a pleasure to join friends and family to support these ākonga at the show in the Caroline Freeman Theatre.

As you may have seen in the news recently, the Government is making reporting and enforcement of attendance at school  a "high priority."  I appreciate parents' support with our students' attendance and the increased communication with us about upcoming absences after my message about it earlier this term.  Thank you.  Please know that I am not trying to be unreasonable about time off school, and I understand there are times when medical appointments cannot be booked days in advance nor outside school hours.  Our goal is to work in partnership with families to ensure our students get maximum input time, and maintain MOE expectations.

I wish you all a safe and restful holiday.
