The gymnasium was packed, with navy blue yellow trimmed blazers on ¾ of the floor and green blazers taking up the remainder of the court-side seats. Players swapped uniforms and it was ALL ON.

Banter echoed around the teams as our Sports Prefect, Harriett Cuttance, lined up in the centre circle for the tip off against their Head Boy, Krishan Luxmanan.

Columba struck first through the powerful Deputy Head Girl duo of Maia Joseph and Jess Cowie. These two combined well throughout the game, helping Harriett Cuttance score many of Columba’s total points. Points on the board kept flowing for JMC through the lethal accuracy of Josh Hou and Otago Representative Max Walker. Dubious score keeping saw a few extra points being added to keep the boys in green with a slight cushion advantage over their opposition.

Isobel Fraser was absolute dynamite on defence, stealing intercepts from every direction and teaming up with fellow prefect, Cara Busse, to stick with their star player and disrupt the flow of his game. Alice O’Halloran and Emma McCaughan provided some much needed points in the paint and put their height to good use under the rim. Ana Tarapi and Cierra Reid proved crucial in running the floor, showing their speed at both ends of the court, whereas Ashleigh McDonald was purely on court for the laughs, keeping everyone on their toes and showing exactly how to have fun no matter where the ball is. MVP and Player of the Game has to go to our very own Sports Prefect, Olivia Fowler, who demonstrated courage, resilience and determination by always making the most of every situation.

However, the tall timber of Caleb Moody proved too much in the rebounding department as JMC sealed victory down the stretch to claim match #1 in the head to head. Challenge #2 will be Netball and is set to take place at Columba College early in Term 3.
