Message from Lydia Joseph, Head Prefect

Lydia Joseph, Head Prefect —

Head Prefect, Lydia Joseph gave an empowering message to the Year 7 - 13 students at assembly on Monday 5 February, sharing her vision and goals for Columba College in 2018.

My name is Lydia, and I’ve been at Columba since I was ten years old. In that time I’ve explored many different activities at the school, ranging from giving speeches in front of my class about my love for One Direction in Year 10 to now, where I enjoy debating and talking about much more important issues. But the point is that Columba has always been a place where I have, and I hope that you too will, always felt free to explore and try new things.

And so this is how I like to look at our school theme for the year, Alere Flammam “Nourish the Flame.” As a school, we are all going to aim this year to create a supportive, fun and inspirational environment for us each to succeed in, however I’d like to challenge you each individually to also try and feed your own flame this year. By this I mean not only taking good care of yourself, but also going further to try and find out what makes you happiest and what your true passions are. Some of you will already know, that hockey or singing or reading is the activity that you love most - but for others I would urge you to try out just some of the wide range of sports, clubs and cultural activities that the school has to offer - because it really is the perfect place to find your own flame. All of my greatest passions today, are ones that I’ve found throughout my time at Columba - and so my greatest advice to you would be to try and do the same.

At our Year 13 leadership camp, my year group also reflected on this theme, and I’d like to share with you three major things that we all decided would be important to us this year, and encourage you all to try and implement them into your school life as well.

Firstly, we acknowledged the extremely qualified and wiling staff that we are so lucky to have here, and decided that it was important we best utilised the support that they constantly offer. This means is that forming close and positive relationships with your teachers can be just as valuable as having them with your peers.

Secondly, we decided it was also important to nourish our own year group and the bonds within it - as being part of a close and friendly cohort is vital for individual success at school as well.

And finally, as Year 13’s we are all very committed to being an approachable and caring senior group- and so I would encourage anyone, especially the new Year 7s and 9s not to ever feel intimated by us, and instead see us as an older version of yourself.

Ultimately I’d encourage everyone to enjoy this year as much as possible - try new things, treat yourself at the canteen, make new friends and love your classes - because thanks to the constant nourishment we receive from Mrs Hayes, our teachers and our peers - I’m sure that both the school’s flame and your own flame will burn bright this year.
