Commissioning of Mrs Pauline Duthie as Principal

Dr J Macleod —

At 5pm on Wednesday 1 May, the Columba Community gathered at Knox Church for the commissioning of Mrs Pauline Duthie as our new Principal.

We were greeted by Mr Tahu Pōtiki, Kamatua of Ōtākou Marae, and graced with a beautiful waiata from Ripeka Pōtiki of Year 8. The Rev. Dr Kerry Enright joined in welcoming us, acknowledging the school’s connection with the Knox community.

Through a series of readings and a short message, we reflected on ‘treasures old and new’ (Matthew 13:52). What is the thing that you have had for the longest amount of time? Is it a favourite teddy? A treasured gift? Your name? We keep the things that are of value to us.

Columba has a long tradition of providing a supportive and settled learning environment where all students can achieve to the best of their abilities; a culture of grace, kindness and respect; and opportunities for students to develop as well-rounded people in their studies, in sporting and cultural pursuits, and in the spiritual dimension of life. It is Mrs Duthie’s task – and ours – to ensure that we bring forth treasures old and new here at Columba College.

The commissioning itself was performed by Rev. Andrew Scott, Moderator of Southern Presbytery, and supported by a number of other Presbytery members. As a former school teacher, Rev. Scott brought an appreciation of the challenges and joys of teaching as he spoke prayers and words of blessing for Mrs Duthie and the school.

The service was a wonderful opportunity to give a formal welcome to Mrs Duthie and to acknowledge the depth of experience, passion and commitment that she brings to the College.

Finally, a question to ponder, if there was one thing from the past that you could ensure was carried into the future, what would it be?
