Volleyball has a very high participation rate at Columba College.

Columba has 16 volleyball teams (around 145 players) in 2021. There are four intermediate teams (years 7 and 8), seven junior teams (years 9 and 10) and five senior teams.

Term One is the tournament part of the season for the Senior A team. The team played in several tournaments, including the Mainland and Otago Champs, in preparation for Nationals. At the Mainland tournament the team won 6 out of 7 games, unfortunately going down to Riccarton in the final, to finish the tournament second in Division 2. These tournaments were great opportunities to bond as a team and get to know new players, as well as a chance for our coach to experiment with positions and plays in preparation for the National tournament.

At the end of March, the Senior A team travelled to Palmerston North for the National tournament. The team had an awesome tournament finishing top of their pool in the first and second rounds, which got them through to the quarter finals. They took out the quarter final which was a tough five set game. At this point the team had seven wins in a row and were now in the semi-final. The girls fought hard in the next two games but unfortunately weren’t so successful and finished the tournament 4th in their Division. Over the year the team improved so much and the team spirit was great. At Nationals, the girls were outstanding and the team showed great strength, never giving up and coming from behind to win several games.

The Nationals concluded the main volleyball season for Senior A and we came away with a total of 22 wins and only 6 losses from four tournaments.

The team could not have achieved these great results without our dedicated coach, Will White and fabulous manager, Dawn Hope. Thank you for making the final tournament so much fun and one that the girls will never forget – especially for the three year 13’s who leave at the end of the year.

During 2021, the Junior A team have been preparing for the South Island Junior Volleyball Champs that are held at the end of November each year. This year’s team will be looking to build on the success of the Columba team that got placed 9th last year. Part of their preparation included attending the Mainland tournament in March where they placed 6th in Division 3. A great result given there are 18 teams in Division 3 and many of these are senior teams. It was an outstanding effort from our juniors and an awesome experience for them. They will be in fine form come the end of the year when they go to the South Island Champs. Thank you to Brett Dailey for all the time and effort you put into coaching the Junior A team.

Congratulations to the following girls who were selected into the Otago age-group teams that travelled to Wellington to play in the Inter-Provincial Championship Tournament:

Otago U19 Jenna Paterson and Ruby Jary

Otago U17 Madi Lobb, Amelia Hollows and Ryan Dailey

Last of all, a special thank you to Mr Sparrow, Teacher in Charge of Volleyball. You have done an amazing job managing so many teams and always finding the time to come along and show your support at games.
