Mathematics: Level 2 (3 courses offered)

Qualifications - NCEA level 2

Course Outline

Level 2 Mathematics introduces new topics like calculus and graphical modelling. The depth of study is greater than at previous levels. There are a variety of different courses at Level 2 to meet the range of Mathematical expertise students may require in the future.

Students can select one of three Level 2 Mathematics course options: General Mathematics and Statistics (12MAS), Applied Mathematics and Statistics (12MAT) or Mathematics Data and Modelling (12MAD). Please note that due to limited spaces in each course, the Mathematics Department may place students in specific courses relative to their academic performance in Level 1.

12MAS Mathematics and Statistics (21 Credits)

This course provides a foundation for future Mathematics and Statistics study. This course is recommended for students who see themselves going on to study in areas such as Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, and First Year Health Sciences. This course includes Algebra, Statistics, and introduction to Calculus. Students who take this course can progress on to Year 13 Calculus and Statistics.

12MAD Data and Modelling (15 Credits)

This course provides an alternative pathway in Mathematics. This course leads on to the alternative Mathematics and Statistics course at Year 13. Students who achieve at a high level are also able to take Year 13 Statistics but will not be as well prepared as those who have completed the other Year 12 courses. Entry into this course is subject to approval from the HoD.
