Digital Technology: Level 3

Qualification - NCEA level 3 Technology/NCEA Technology Scholarship (optional). NOTE: 91900 or 91901 can be taken depending on the context of the digital technologies project being completed. 91900 is compulsory if you are aiming for Scholarship.

Knowledge and skill in Digital Technologies are essential for the 21st century workplace. Having a background in Digital Technologies increases employment opportunities in a range of fields. It is an essential course for students thinking about future pathways in computer science, creative industries (animation, movie making, interface design, web development), product design, business or engineering. It also complements other NCEA classes.

Course Outline

In NCEA Level 3 Digital Technology, students choose an area of interest that they would like to specialise in and then develop their own software outcome that could be utilised in the real world. Examples of past student outcomes have been websites that showcase their own digital works for photography or design, creative parallax scrolling webcomics, websites for clients with small businesses, the Columba College Athletic Sports Database and the Columba College Chronicle. If you have a passion for a particular area of digital technology or a particular subject, this is your chance to develop your skills to a new level and showcase your talents. As you develop your own project, you will learn about software development methodologies used by real-world developers. You will be in charge of developing your own project brief, planning the conceptual design for the project, and developing the final project outcome.

Students may also choose to develop their project for submission as a Technology Scholarship portfolio and report.

Prerequisites

Level 1 and/or Level 2 Digital Technology are recommended. Students who have not taken Level 2 Digital Technology may discuss entry into Level 3 Digital Technology with the Digital Technology HoD.

Scholarship

The Technology Scholarship Performance Standard requires students to present a written reflective report based on their experiences in developing a technological outcome along with a supporting portfolio. A portfolio is an organised collection of evidence of a candidate undertaking technological practice.
